Communism in Romania

From the 5th to the 10th of February 2023, students and teachers from various European countries, including The Basque Country, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Poland, and Romania, gathered in Medgidia, Constanta county, Romania. The event aimed to educate participants about Romania's communist past and its implications after half a century.

The five-day event kicked off with a warm welcome for all delegations on Sunday the 5th. The following day, the Cultural Center "IN Roman" hosted the opening ceremony, ice-breaking activities, and presentations from each delegation about their respective countries, cities, and schools. The Romanian team later provided extensive information on communism, totalitarianism, democracy, and the importance of freedom.

On the second day, the event focused on the main topic of communism in Romania, with a workshop in partnership with the Faculty of History and Political Science at Ovidius University in Constanta. A lecture by Mr. Lecturer Gabriel Stelian Manea followed, with intense debates on the consequences of communism in Europe.

The third day saw an educational trip to the Adamclisi museum complex, where participants explored the monument, ancient citadel, and history museum. The day ended with a Romanian-themed party, where Romanian traditions, culinary preparations, music, and dance were presented.

On the last day of the project, participants visited historic landmarks, including Fort 13 in Jilava and the Palace of the Parliament. The event highlighted the importance of learning from history to prevent repeating it.

Throughout the event, Romanian hospitality, the creativity and imagination of Romanian students, and the total involvement of the entire school in project activities made it an unforgettable experience for European guests. The C6 meeting provided a unique opportunity for participants to gain valuable insights into Romania's communist past and its aftermath, promoting greater cross-cultural understanding and cooperation among European nations.
